Dr. Jasmine Brock-Ingram
I first wrote the name Southern Black Lens in my journal in 2020, at the time I had no idea what those words would later mean to me. One day the world shut down as I was pursuing my doctorate of veterinary medicine at Tuskegee University. It was during that time I dusted off my camera and started photographing everything around me. After a while I developed an expansive collection of beautiful images. Originally I thought of creating a page solely dedicated to my photography, but as I looked at those images I discovered that there was a deeper story waiting to be told.
Being born in New Orleans, raised in Atlanta and splitting my summers between Mississippi and Detroit has allowed me to experience Black American culture in a myriad of ways. I was blessed to have been raised in an environment that celebrated Blackness and encouraged creativity. However, growing up in the South left me unaware of just how much Black history was omitted from my formal education. With the current attacks on DEI, critical race theory, and civil rights I felt compelled to pivot and create something for the preservation and celebration of Black American culture, Southern Black Lens.
I started researching the history of Black Americans in the United States. I became more intentional with my photography and began conducting interviews. I have created this platform as a way to shine a light on Black art, history, and culture through my lens.
